August Awareness Challenge FinalAugust is coming to an end. At the beginning of the month, I invited you to practice something incredibly small. Pause. One breath. One moment. A little space between what happens… and what you choose to do next. Not to see how well you performed. But to see what you noticed.
|
This might be the most important question of the entire challenge.
When you created space, what did you discover inside it?
Perhaps you discovered that anger was covering hurt.
Maybe fear was pretending to be caution.
Maybe pride wanted the last word.
Maybe an old experience was influencing a completely new situation.
Maybe you discovered that the first thought in your head wasn’t necessarily the thought you wanted to follow.
Or perhaps you discovered something even simpler.
You had options.
That realization matters.
Because we often experience our reactions as though they are decisions.
Something happens.
We feel something.
We think something.
We respond.
It feels like one continuous event.
The pause interrupts that sequence just long enough for us to see the pieces.
Something happened.
Something influenced me.
Now I get to decide what happens next.
Before the month ends, find a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:
You don’t need perfect answers.
You don’t even need to write them down.
Just spend a few minutes noticing.
Because noticing is where this entire journey began.
In July, our challenge was awareness.
We practiced noticing the patterns quietly shaping our thoughts, emotions, and decisions.
Then August added something new.
We practiced creating space.
July asked:
“What is happening?”
August asked:
“Do I have to react to it?”
Together, those two practices create something powerful.
Awareness helps us recognize influence.
The pause gives us time to decide what authority that influence receives.
That’s where choice begins to feel different.
The challenge may be ending.
The practice doesn’t have to.
You don’t need to pause before every tiny decision.
You don’t need to analyze every thought.
And you certainly don’t need to spend your life questioning everything you do.
That would defeat the purpose.
The goal is much simpler.
When something matters…
create space.
When emotions are loud…
create space.
When fear demands an immediate answer…
create space.
When an old pattern begins choosing for you…
create space.
Sometimes one breath is enough.
Changing our lives can sound enormous.
We imagine dramatic decisions.
Major transformations.
Completely different habits.
But August reminded me that change can happen somewhere much smaller.
In the second before we speak.
In the breath before we respond.
In the moment before we follow the familiar path.
The pause doesn’t guarantee we’ll make the perfect choice.
It gives us something better.
The opportunity to make the choice intentionally.
That’s enough.
As August comes to an end, take a moment to recognize the pauses you noticed, the ones you missed, and the choices you discovered along the way.
Then carry the practice with you.
One breath.
One pause.
One choice.
One day at a time.
Until next time,
